TCPA
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (47 U.S.C. § 227), the US federal law restricting autodialed calls and calls using an artificial or prerecorded voice, including AI voices.
The TCPA is the main US federal law about calling people's phones. It restricts calls made with an autodialer or an “artificial or prerecorded voice,” generally requiring the called party's prior express consent — and prior express written consent for marketing. The FCC confirmed in 2024 that AI-generated and cloned voices fall within the “artificial or prerecorded voice” rules. Statutory damages are $500 per call, trebled to $1,500 for willful violations.
